The department was established in the year 1964. The major activities of the department are teaching various need specific courses to the UG, PG and Ph.D. students of Agriculture, Home Science, Engineering and Dairy Technology faculties. The department also offered PG programme in M.Sc. (Ag.) Statistics from 1987-1994. Besides other courses the department is offering course in Econometrics, Sample Techniques for Social Scientists and Psychometrics also. The other major activity of the department is to provide statistical counseling to research students and research scientists.

The staff of the department is well qualified and technically competent. The field of specialization of the faculty members are design of experiment, sample survey, econometrics, Psychometrics, Computer programming etc. The staff members have also contributed research papers in reputed journals along with publication of reference books.
